ROME (CNS) -- The head of the schismatic Society of St. Pius X said his group rejoiced at a high-profile celebration of a Tridentine Mass in Rome and said it showed "progress in the direction of tradition" at the Vatican. Bishop Bernard Fellay, one of four bishops ordained against papal orders by the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1988, said the Mass confirmed the widespread feeling among his society's members that "something important is going on" in Rome. He made the comments in an interview with Catholic News Service May 29 from the society's headquarters in Menzingen, Switzerland. On May 24, with Pope John Paul II's blessing, Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos celebrated the Tridentine Mass at the Rome Basilica of St. Mary Major. It was the first time a cardinal had celebrated the old rite in a patriarchal basilica in Rome since the new Roman Missal was promulgated in 1969. Bishop Fellay said the celebration was "without a doubt a good thing, and so we rejoice about it." At the same time, he questioned why it was necessary to refer during the liturgy to the pope's letter "Ecclesia Dei" of 1988, which announced the excommunication of Bishop Fellay and the other bishops ordained in defiance of the pope's expressed wishes.
