Chers amis,

Egyptian Police fires rubber bullets at 25000 angry Copts inside the Cathedral
Press Release: For information contact Michael Meunier 703-930-0120
URGENT: (Washington DC, 6/20/2001): US Copts Association learned that on Wednesday June 20, 2001 around 7:00 PM Egypt Time, and until the time of this release (2:40 PM EST), over 25,000 angry Copts are gathered inside the Cathedral in Abassyah to protest human Rights abuses by the Egyptian government. The crowd chanted anti government slogans and wanted the international community to investigate the Egyptian government's hand in Al-Kosheh massacre and Al-Nabaa newspaper issues, which attacked the church.
The Egyptian police fired rubber bullets wounding over 100 Copts (number is unconfirmed) while they were inside the Cathedral. US Copts Association was on a mobile phone with one of the demonstrators and confirmed the gunfire and was able to speak to two of the wounded protesters. The Egyptian police are hunting these peaceful protesters while the Cathedral walls confine them.
We call on the International community to guarantee the safety of the peaceful protesters and to pressure the Egyptian government to seriously address the serious concerns the Coptic community has in Egypt.
